Irene Charalambidou, a Member of Parliament for Lefkosia and former member of the AKEL Parliamentary Group, is stepping down as Chair of the Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights, handing over the position to Giorgos Koukoumas, who previously served as Deputy Chair and is a member of AKEL. Ms. Charalambidou expressed her satisfaction with the excellent cooperation she had with the committee members, regardless of their political affiliation, and emphasized the importance of unity in defending human rights in Cyprus. The resignation of Ms. Charalambidou comes a few days after her removal from the AKEL Parliamentary Group. However, she assured that she will continue to participate in the Human Rights Committee, as well as other committees of which she is already a member, due to the limited remaining months of the current parliamentary term. Ms. Charalambidou stated that her greatest achievement during her tenure as Chair was her ability to act as Chair for all Members of Parliament, without partisan bias. She also expressed her confidence that the Committee, under the leadership of Mr. Koukoumas, will continue to work with the same dedication to promote human rights. Committee members, such as Rita Supermann (DISY), Christos Senekis (DIKO), and Alexandra Attalidou, expressed their gratitude to Ms. Charalambidou for her cooperation and the highlighting of important issues. Mr. Koukoumas, for his part, assured that the good cooperation within the Committee will continue until the end of the term.
