The 'Transgressive' Grandiosity and Hatred

The article analyzes the deep roots of stagnation and self-destructive behavior in Greece and Cyprus, despite their significant economic and technological successes. The author argues that the historical legacy of conspiracy, the hostile attitude towards the state, and atrophied socialism are the key factors hindering progress. Conspiracy, ingrained in the history of the two countries, creates a climate of distrust and undermines institutions. The lack of respect for the state and the laws leads to predatory behavior and impunity. Finally, the excessive emphasis on individual or group identity hinders the development of a sense of collective responsibility and solidarity. These factors allow a ruling class to operate unhindered and maintain its power.
