Slovakia Threatens Retaliation Against Ukraine Over Russian Oil Supply Disruption

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico declared a state of emergency for oil supplies due to the disruption of Russian deliveries via the Druzhba pipeline and threatened Ukraine with retaliation if the situation continues. Slovakia will release 250,000 tons from its emergency reserves. The interruption of Russian deliveries is due to a Russian attack on January 27, according to the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. However, Fico claims that the repair work has been completed and accuses the Ukrainian government of not restarting deliveries to “blackmail” Hungary, which opposes Ukraine's EU membership. Fico threatened to terminate cooperation on electricity supply to Ukraine, which is facing outages due to Russian strikes. Slovakia has asked Croatia to allow the transport of Russian oil via the Adria pipeline, however, there are technical and economic problems. The European Commission stated that it is monitoring the situation and is ready to convene a meeting of the oil coordination group, assuring that there are no short-term risks to the supply of Hungary and Slovakia, which have adequate reserves.
