Dust Reduces Solar Panel Output by 20% in Cyprus

New scientific research from the Cyprus Institute has found that dust reduces solar radiation reaching photovoltaic systems by 20% or more. The largest losses are recorded on clear days, when energy production should be high. The research, which analyzed data from 472 photovoltaic installations across Cyprus, developed a new machine learning model to accurately capture the impact of dust. The findings are significant for energy planning and improving forecasts in areas with frequent dust episodes, such as Cyprus, which is investing heavily in solar energy. The study was funded by the EU's Recovery and Resilience Mechanism.
