Early Menopause Increases Heart Risk by 40%

A large study by Northwestern Medicine showed that early menopause (before age 40) increases the risk of coronary heart disease by 40% compared to women who enter menopause later. The study, which followed over 10,000 women for decades, found that the risk was increased by 41% for Black women and 39% for White women, even after considering other risk factors. Early menopause is three times more common in Black women, likely due to a combination of health factors and social inequalities. Researchers emphasize the need for doctors to systematically ask women about their age of menopause onset for early intervention.
