US Officially Withdraws from WHO

The United States officially withdrew from the World Health Organization (WHO) today, despite warnings of negative consequences for global and American health. The decision, made by President Donald Trump in January 2025, also disregards US legal obligations to pay $260 million in contributions to the UN. The Trump administration accuses the WHO of inadequate pandemic management and has frozen funding to the organization. The WHO Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, expressed regret over the withdrawal, calling it a loss for both the US and the rest of the world. The WHO also notes that the US has not paid its dues for 2024 and 2025. Member states will discuss the implications of the withdrawal in February. Bill Gates, a major donor to the WHO, believes the US will not reconsider its decision in the near future. He emphasizes the importance of the WHO for global health and says he is willing to promote the idea of the US returning if given the opportunity. The US withdrawal has caused a financial crisis at the WHO, forcing it to reduce its staff by 25% and curtail its activities. The US has traditionally been the largest donor to the organization, covering approximately 18% of its funding.
