Olympic Flame Arrives in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy

The torch relay for the Winter Olympic Games has arrived in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, marking the 50th leg of its journey across the country. Cortina, along with Milan, will be the main host cities of the Games, which will be held from February 6th to 22nd, and coincides with the 70th anniversary of the 1956 Winter Games that were held in the same town. The torch relay had previously passed through Vajont, an area that was hit by a devastating landslide in 1963, which caused floods and the death of around 1,900 people. Cortina, although a small town with around 5,000 inhabitants, is a popular destination for wealthy skiers and has been used as a setting for various films, including the comedy “The Pink Panther”.
