Cyprus Ranks Third in EU for Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction

Cyprus secured the third position within the European Union for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the third quarter of 2025, achieving a 5.2% decrease compared to the second quarter. Eurostat data indicates that overall EU emissions increased by 1.1% during the same period, despite a 0.4% rise in GDP. The sectors contributing to emission increases were households and manufacturing, while the electricity, gas, steam, and air conditioning supply sector experienced a reduction. Compared to the third quarter of 2024, EU emissions remained stable, while GDP increased by 1.6%. In total, 10 EU countries reduced their emissions in the third quarter of 2025, while emissions increased in 17 countries. Cyprus follows Estonia (-17.4%) and Slovenia (-5.7%) in the ranking of countries with the largest reductions. Notably, among the countries that reduced emissions, only Lithuania also experienced a decrease in GDP, while the remaining countries showed GDP growth or stability alongside emission reductions. This suggests that Cyprus and other nations successfully lowered their emissions while maintaining or improving their economic performance.
