Cyprus Tops EU in Citizens Not Using Public Transport

Cyprus ranks first in the European Union in terms of the percentage of citizens who do not use public transport. According to Eurostat data for 2024, 85% of people over the age of 16 in Cyprus do not use public transport at all. Italy, Portugal, France, Slovenia and Greece follow. Conversely, the lowest rates were recorded in Luxembourg, Estonia and Sweden. Only 4.5% of Cypriots over the age of 16 use public transport daily, 4.3% weekly, 2.9% once a month and 3.3% less than once a month. At the EU level, 10.7% use public transport daily, 11.6% weekly, 10.0% monthly and 17.1% less than once a month, while 50.6% do not use them at all. The highest rate of weekly public transport use was recorded in Luxembourg (23.1%), followed by Latvia (19.2%) and Estonia (18.2%). These figures highlight the need to improve public transport in Cyprus and to encourage its use by citizens.
