Cyprus is set to assume the Presidency of the Council of the European Union in January 2026, marking a historic and multifaceted opportunity for the island nation. This undertaking comes at a time of significant geopolitical, energy, and social challenges for Europe, requiring Cyprus to effectively manage its institutional role and enhance its influence. A key advantage of the Presidency is the increased political visibility Cyprus will gain, being at the center of European discussions for six months. This will allow the country to promote crucial issues such as energy security in the Eastern Mediterranean, migration management, and the Cyprus issue. Furthermore, the Presidency is expected to boost the Cypriot economy through the organization of meetings, conferences, and technical councils. Simultaneously, the preparation and implementation of the Presidency will serve as a catalyst for upgrading public administration and modernizing state structures. The President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, and the Deputy Minister for European Affairs, Marilena Raouna, play a pivotal role in the success of the Presidency, leveraging their experience and knowledge in European diplomacy and institutions. The contribution of the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (CyBC) in informing and communicating with the public is also significant.
