Cyprus Seeks EU Assistance to Combat Foot-and-Mouth Disease

Cyprus has requested urgent assistance from the European Commission, specifically from the veterinary experts of the Directorate-General for Health, to address the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease. The Veterinary Services, in collaboration with other departments, will carry out spraying in livestock areas, starting in the province of Larnaca, and will restrict access to them. Furthermore, livestock farmers are reminded of their obligation to implement strict biosecurity measures, such as fencing farms, disinfecting vehicles and people, careful management of visitors, and sourcing feed from approved countries. Compliance with these measures is crucial to limit the spread of the disease. Due to the seriousness of the situation, all livestock units in the free areas have been quarantined. Strict measures have been taken, such as a ban on the movement of cattle and sheep for 21 days, the requirement of a permit for slaughter, and a strict ban on the entry and exit of people from infected units. The Director of Veterinary Services has announced that daily updates will be provided to the press on the evolution of the situation. The government is taking all necessary measures to control the disease and protect livestock in Cyprus.
