The Government Loses Control – “Clean Hands” Says Christodoulides – Intention to Abolish the Agency Under the Weight of Revelations

The Christodoulides Government is experiencing its most serious crisis of credibility since taking office. The resignation of the Director of the President's Office, Charalambos Haralambous, following the publication of the controversial video, has not been enough to quell the political storm. Despite the Presidential Office's attempts to present the resignation as an “act of confidence”, the opposition criticizes the delay in the decision and the overall handling of the scandal. President Christodoulides announced his intention to abolish the Social Support Agency, a move interpreted as an attempt to limit the damage, given the Agency's connection to his family environment. The crisis is expected to affect the upcoming parliamentary elections, while Cyprus' international image has been damaged, as the crisis occurred during its Presidency of the Council of the EU. Questions remain unanswered regarding the donors of the Agency, the “orchestrators” of the attacks, and the scope of the investigation.
