Commission Approves Google's €27 Billion Acquisition of Wiz

The European Commission has approved, unconditionally, Google's proposed acquisition of US-based Wiz for €27 billion, according to the EU Merger Regulation. The Commission's investigation concluded that the acquisition would not raise competition concerns in the European Economic Area (EEA). Wiz specializes in cloud-native application protection platforms, while Google offers cloud infrastructure and cloud security services. The Commission conducted an extensive investigation, collecting information from customers and competitors. It found that there are sufficient alternatives for customers and that the data Google will gain access to is not commercially sensitive. The acquisition is expected to accelerate the development of cloud security and the use of multi-cloud. Although the transaction did not meet the turnover thresholds of the EU Merger Regulation, the Commission accepted a referral request from Google, as the transaction could be examined under national competition laws in several member states. The approval of the acquisition marks a significant development in the cloud security sector.
