“Medicine is not mathematics”: Koumas’ Intervention After Audit Office Check (audio)

Following the report of the Audit Office on the operation of the Accident and Emergency Departments (AEDs) at Nicosia and Limassol General Hospitals, the president of PASYKI, Sotiris Koumas, intervened in the “Second Look” show, emphasizing systemic problems and not individual responsibilities of doctors. Mr. Koumas argued that medicine is not simply mathematics and that decisions are made under pressure, with the patient's life and health as a priority. He confirmed reports of understaffing in night shifts, resulting in shifts with only two or three people. He also raised the issue of insufficient radiology coverage outside of working hours and the lack of a comprehensive legal framework for telemedicine, while pointing out that doctors do not refuse telemedicine but need institutional coverage. Finally, he referred to the deactivation of 40 beds at Limassol General Hospital due to a lack of nursing staff and the delay in voting on the 2026 budget.
