Europe Needs Nuclear Energy and Renewables, Says von der Leyen

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced new measures to accelerate the development of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and reduce energy costs for households during the Nuclear Energy Summit in Paris. Von der Leyen emphasized that nuclear energy and renewable energy sources are complementary solutions for a clean, affordable, and resilient energy system. She highlighted the need for a radical change in Europe's energy policy to reduce high energy costs and ensure the competitiveness of industry. Europe, she stated, is dependent on expensive and unstable energy imports, while the solution lies in harnessing its own low-emission sources, namely nuclear energy and renewables. The President of the Commission announced a new European strategy for SMRs, aiming for their operation in Europe by the early 2030s. This includes the creation of regulatory “sandboxes” for testing innovative technologies, aligning regulations between member states, and providing €200 million from the Emissions Trading System (ETS) to support private investment. Von der Leyen emphasized Europe's leading position in nuclear technology, with half a million skilled workers, more than the US and China, and called for rapid and scaled-up action. The new package of energy measures will be presented to the European Parliament in Strasbourg, with the aim of reducing energy costs and actively involving citizens in the energy transition.
