Europe Needs Nuclear Energy and Renewables, Says von der Leyen

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced new measures to accelerate the development of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and reduce energy costs, emphasizing that nuclear energy and renewable energy sources are complementary solutions for a clean, affordable and resilient energy system. Ms. von der Leyen stressed the need to change Europe's energy policy in order to address high energy costs and ensure the competitiveness of industry. The new European strategy for SMRs envisages their operation in Europe from the beginning of the 2030s, with the creation of regulatory “sandboxes” for innovation and the alignment of regulations between member states. In addition, €200 million will be allocated from the Emissions Trading System (ETS) to support private investment.
