Europe at a Critical Crossroads and Cyprus Without the Right Strategy

The European Union is at a critical juncture, facing a deep crisis and failing to react to rapid geopolitical changes. Traditional alliances are being tested, and the EU's ability to function as a unified foreign policy force is being questioned. The EU summit in Brussels highlighted the Union's inability to translate its economic power into geopolitical influence, limited to general calls for de-escalation. Cyprus is called upon to develop an active and strategic stance, rather than the fragmented actions that characterize the government. The author analyzes the challenges facing the EU, such as sanctions against Russia and internal disagreements among member states, with particular reference to Hungary and Belgium. Hungary, with its Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, is an obstacle to the adoption of new sanctions against Russia and the provision of financial aid to Ukraine. Differences regarding the use of frozen Russian funds to finance Ukraine and the economic impact of sanctions on Europe itself create additional obstacles. The author expresses hope that member states will recognize their common interest in a strong Europe and rally to strengthen it, but emphasizes the need for a more decisive and coordinated approach to addressing the challenges.
