Cyprus's European Illusion Was Never Naive. It Was Just Incomplete.

Dr. Stelios Platis analyzes Cyprus's European experience, arguing that the expectation of a 'safe harbor' has proven incomplete. While joining the EU was logical, the application of rules is not symmetrical, and solidarity is selective. The 2013 deposit haircut demonstrated that the EU can impose unnecessary sacrifices on smaller countries. Furthermore, the ongoing Turkish occupation of Cyprus is not treated with the same seriousness as the invasion of Ukraine, revealing a contradiction in the application of international law. The author argues that Cyprus is in a dilemma: outside the EU, the rules weaken, while inside the EU, they are applied unequally. Nevertheless, the EU remains the best available option, but consistency in the application of its principles is required.
