Greece Considers Nuclear Energy, Despite Renewable Investments

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis stated at the Nuclear Energy Summit in Paris that Greece is considering including nuclear energy in its energy mix, despite not currently being a nuclear energy-producing country. He argued that Europe's rejection of nuclear energy was a strategic mistake and highlighted Greece's significant investments in renewable energy sources like wind and solar, now making it an electricity exporter. Mitsotakis acknowledged Europe's need for nuclear energy and welcomed France's decision to strengthen its nuclear capacity. He noted that countries that had abandoned nuclear energy are now returning to it. He emphasized the need for an objective, non-ideological dialogue, based on scientific research and European expertise, to evaluate the potential integration of nuclear energy into Greece's national energy policy. Furthermore, the Prime Minister mentioned the potential role of nuclear energy in reducing carbon dioxide emissions in international shipping. His statement was met with enthusiastic applause from attendees, including representatives from 41 countries, heads of state and government, and representatives of international organizations and institutional investors. Mitsotakis's statement signals a potential shift in Greece's energy policy, taking into account developments in Europe and the need to diversify energy sources to address the energy crisis and achieve climate goals.
