The Execution of Nikos Belogiannis and Reactions in Cyprus Part 2

The article examines the mobilizations and persecutions that took place in Cyprus after the conviction of Nikos Belogiannis and his comrades. After the defeat of the DSE, Belogiannis secretly returned to Greece in 1950 under the pseudonym Errikos Panoz, with the aim of rebuilding the KKE. He was arrested in December 1950 and tried under the Compulsory Law 509/1947, sentenced to death along with 11 others. The first trial took place in Athens in 1951, with the future dictator George Papadopoulos as a judge. The initial conviction caused international outcry, but Prime Minister Nikolaos Plastiras was forced to refer Belogiannis to a new trial on charges of espionage. The article analyzes the coverage of the case by the Cypriot press, where newspapers viewed the issue from different perspectives, influenced by the climate of the civil war in Greece. The left supported the DSE, while the right supported the National Army. The conviction of Belogiannis and his comrades caused strong reactions in Cyprus, with mobilizations and persecutions by the authorities.
