EU to Attend Trump's Peace Council as Observer

Published February 16, 2026, 17:28

The European Union will participate as an observer in the inaugural meeting of Donald Trump's “Peace Council,” but will not be joining the organization. Commissioner for the Mediterranean, Dubravka Šuica, will represent the EU in Washington on Thursday, with the aim of presenting the European position on the situation in Gaza. The EU maintains reservations about the council, primarily regarding its scope, governance, and compatibility with the United Nations Charter. The “Peace Council” aims to resolve armed conflicts worldwide, but membership requires a payment of one billion dollars, which has drawn criticism and comparisons to a “pay-to-play” version of the UN Security Council.
