EU Considers Using 'Aspides' Mission in Strait of Hormuz – Aiming to Protect Navigation

The European Union is considering using the 'Aspides' mission in the Strait of Hormuz to protect navigation, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, stated. The discussion comes amid growing concerns about navigation safety in the region, as the Strait of Hormuz is vital for global oil and gas trade. Borrell mentioned that the EU is considering modifying the mandate of the 'Aspides' mission, which is currently deployed in the Red Sea to protect commercial ships from Houthi attacks. However, this requires the consent of member states and confirmation of the mission's ability to operate effectively in the Strait of Hormuz. Pressure to strengthen security in the Strait of Hormuz has increased from President Donald Trump, who has called on US allies and China to send warships to the region. France has also proposed a “purely defensive” international mission to secure the strait. The EU is considering various options, including using the 'Aspides' mission and creating a new coalition of volunteers. The goal is to find the most effective solution to ensure freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and prevent further escalation of tensions in the region.
