“My Grandmother Kyriacou” Returns to the Municipal Theatre of Nicosia on March 18 & 19

The play “My Grandmother Kyriacou,” a co-production of the International Festival of Nicosia and the Municipality of Paralimni, will return to the Municipal Theatre of Nicosia on March 18 and 19, 2026. The play, belonging to the genre of documentary theatre, presents the life and artistic journey of Kyriacou Pelagia, a significant figure in Cypriot song and musical tradition. The story of Kyriacou's life is told through the eyes of her granddaughter, Irene Pelagia, who also serves as the musical director of the play. The text is by Andreas Nikolaidis and the direction is by Kleitos Kleitou. The play does not present a simple biography, but a collective memory, a living voice that invites the audience to dance, grieve, and celebrate. Kyriacou is portrayed as an authentic and proud woman who began writing and singing tradition at a mature age, inspiring younger generations. Documentary theatre is a genre of theatre that is gaining increasing popularity, renewing the relationship between theatre and reality. It uses documents, such as interviews and newspapers, as a source of material for the theatrical text, while verbatim theatre is based exclusively on the exact words spoken by people in interviews or testimonies.
