Bulgaria Officially Adopts the Euro

Bulgaria officially adopted the euro on January 1st, 2024, becoming the 21st country in the Eurozone, almost 20 years after joining the European Union. The transition from the lev to the euro marks the completion of Bulgaria's integration into the EU, with the hope of strengthening economic ties with other member states. Despite the enthusiasm, there are concerns about potential price increases, especially in an already unstable political environment. Thousands of citizens gathered in Sofia to celebrate the historic moment with fireworks and a concert. President Radev expressed regret over the lack of a referendum, while officials reassured citizens that the adoption of the euro will boost the economy and bring the country closer to the West.
