Parliament Partially Accepts President's Remand Regarding Hotels

The Parliament partially accepted the President's remand regarding the law on the Regulation of the Establishment and Operation of Hotels and Tourist Accommodations. The plenary approved the amendments proposed by the Parliamentary Committee on Energy, Trade, Industry and Tourism, after the re-examination of the law. The amendments mainly concern the deletion of the obligation of the Deputy Ministry of Tourism to receive and assist in the completion of even incomplete applications, as well as the abolition of the requirement for a certificate of compliance with collective labor agreements for the issuance of a special operating license. The approval of the amendments was made with 30 votes in favor and 15 against. The President had remanded the law for reasons of violation of the principles of separation of powers, legality and equality. The remand concerned the creation of a new special operating license and not the extension of the time limits for the operation of the accommodations. AKEL MP Kostas Kosta stated that the last extension for compliance of the accommodations with the law had expired months ago and that the legislation gave the opportunity to comply with fire safety issues. AKEL does not accept the remand in its entirety.
