Hungary to Block 20th Sanctions Package Against Russia

Hungary's Foreign Minister announced that the country will block the approval of the 20th package of European Union sanctions against Russia. The stated reason is the disruption of Russian oil deliveries via the Droujba pipeline, which Hungary attributes to Ukrainian attacks. Hungary states that it will not allow the adoption of important decisions for the EU as long as oil deliveries are not permitted. The European Union had proposed new sanctions against Russia in early February, focusing on the banking and energy sectors, as well as new import and export restrictions. Additionally, the European Commission is seeking to use the Anti-Coercion Instrument to limit the export of CNC machine tools to countries where there is a risk of re-export to Russia. Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the EU had imposed a ban on most oil imports from Russia, but the Droujba pipeline was temporarily exempted to give Central European countries time to become independent of Russian oil. Hungary and Slovakia did not fully utilize this period. Hungary continues to import Russian oil through the Droujba pipeline, which has been repeatedly targeted by Ukrainian attacks. Hungary's decision to block the sanctions highlights the disagreements within the EU regarding the approach to Russia and the energy dependence of certain countries.
