“Disability is not madness” – Observatory of the Third Age condemns Feidias’s remarks

The Observatory of the Third Age in Cyprus strongly condemns the statements of MEP Feidias Panagiotou, who described the S14 category of the Paralympic Games, concerning individuals with intellectual disabilities, as “for the simpletons”. The Observatory believes that these statements represent an expression of social fascism and intellectual poverty, emphasizing that disability is part of human diversity and people with intellectual disabilities can live a normal life with appropriate support. Furthermore, the Observatory stresses that ignorance does not justify the statements of a politician who is obliged to represent and defend the rights of all citizens. Mr. Panagiotou’s statements insulted athlete Loizos Chrysanthou and every family fighting for the rights of their children with disabilities. The Observatory characterizes arrogance and lack of empathy as the real “madness”, in contrast to disability. It aligns with other organizations and demands a public and practical apology from the MEP, beyond a simple apology on social media. Finally, the Observatory expresses hope that the Cyprus of 2026 will be a society without exclusion, where dignity is not underestimated.
