Shein Expands in France Amidst Investigations

The Chinese fast fashion platform Shein is expanding its physical presence in France with the opening of five new stores in cities including Dijon, Grenoble, Limoges, Rennes, and Angers, in partnership with the BHV department store chain. This expansion follows the opening of Shein's first permanent store in Paris in November, a move that sparked controversy due to the company's low prices and concerns about its impact on the local market. Initially scheduled for December, the opening of the new stores was postponed after the revelation of inappropriate products on Shein's platform, such as sex dolls resembling children and weapons. The co-founder of SGM, Frédéric Merlen, had emphasized the need to adjust the product range and pricing policy. At the same time, French authorities have launched investigations against Shein, with a request to the courts to block the platform's marketplace section. The European Union has also launched an investigation into potential violations of European rules. The expansion of Shein in France is taking place in an environment of intense regulatory pressure and political controversy, as the company seeks to consolidate its position in the European market. The case highlights the challenges faced by fast fashion companies regarding ethics, product safety, and compliance with regulations.
