Zelensky: Kyiv-Moscow Positions on Ukraine Conflict Remain Divergent

Following two days of trilateral negotiations in Geneva, mediated by the US, Rustem Umerov, head of the Ukrainian delegation, stated that progress had been made in talks with Russia, but the positions of the two sides remain distinct. Umerov emphasized the need for consensus among all parties and sufficient time to achieve a "just and lasting peace." He noted that some points have been clarified, but others require further coordination, with the aim of submitting a practical framework for resolving the conflict. President Zelensky confirmed that the positions of Kyiv and Moscow remain different on key issues, such as territorial disputes and the situation at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. Despite the differences, both sides agreed to continue negotiations. The talks were described as "intense and substantive" by Umerov, while both Kyiv and Moscow characterized them as "difficult." According to Umerov, the next step is to reach consensus on submitting a document for review by the presidents of the two countries. The Ukrainian negotiator stressed that Kyiv is seeking a "practical" solution, not just a formal agreement. The process requires time and the agreement of all parties involved. Zelensky's statement underscores the challenges facing the negotiations, despite acknowledging some progress. Disagreement on critical issues, such as territorial integrity and the security of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, suggests that reaching a comprehensive peace agreement will be a long and difficult process.
