Incompatibility Issue for Paphos Municipal Councillor, Interior Ministry and Prefect Intervention

An incompatibility issue has arisen for a Municipal Councillor in the Paphos Municipality, amidst the already tense situation due to the suspension of the Mayor and the leave of absence of the Municipal Secretary. According to the Law, there is no distinction between permanent and temporary educational staff, and incompatibility arises in the case of simultaneously holding a position on the Municipal Council and a position as an educator. The Ministry of Interior, through the Head of the Elections Department, Menelaos Vasiliou, clarified that the responsibility for resolving the issue lies with the Prefect of Paphos. The Prefect will call on the Municipal Councillor to choose between his position on the Council and his position as an educator. This process is provided for by the Municipalities Law of 2022 and aims to avoid conflicts of interest. If the Councillor chooses to resign from his position, it will be filled by the first substitute of the same combination, provided he still belongs to it. The complaint regarding the incompatibility issue was initially submitted to the Ministry of Education, which then referred the Councillor to the provisions of the Municipalities Law. The Prefect of Paphos will grant the Councillor a reasonable period of time to make his decision.
