Zelensky Urges EU for Specific Membership Date, Linking it to Blocking Russian Strategy

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky requested a specific date for Ukraine’s EU membership from the European Parliament, emphasizing that such a commitment would prevent Putin from undermining Ukraine for decades. Zelensky connected Ukraine's EU accession to the security and resilience of his country, stressing that the issue is crucial for countering Russian aggression. Zelensky also referred to the EU's €90 billion funding package to Ukraine, calling it a significant economic security guarantee. He expressed the need for the implementation of this package, despite Hungary’s veto. Zelensky did not reiterate the previously discussed 2027 milestone for accession. The European Parliament approved by a large majority (437 in favor, 82 against, 70 abstentions) a non-binding resolution condemning Russia’s war and holding Russian leadership accountable for war crimes. The resolution also calls for stricter sanctions against Russia. The resolution highlights the need for security guarantees for Ukraine, similar to those provided by Article 5 of NATO and Article 42(7) of the EU Treaty. It supports the rapid integration of Ukraine into the EU single market and the provision of increased military and diplomatic support.
