Livadia Farmers Fear for Livestock as Foot-and-Mouth Disease Spreads

Livestock farmers in the province of Larnaca, Cyprus, are facing a serious crisis due to the spread of foot-and-mouth disease. In Livadia, where the first case was detected, outbreaks have already been found on 4 farms, while other farmers are taking measures to protect their animals. Anxiety is high, as the proximity of the farms makes it difficult to prevent the spread. Farmers express their sadness and concern about the potential loss of their animals, which are a source of income and livelihood for their families. A young farmer, 20 years old, describes the situation as a tragedy, similar to the fires that hit Limassol last summer. A problem reported by farmers is the breeding of birds in the area, which may contribute to the transmission of the disease. Additionally, there are fears of possible introduction of infected hay from the occupied territories, although this has not been confirmed. Farmers emphasize the love and care they show for their animals, and express their hope for the early arrival of vaccines, in order to limit the spread of the virus. They also point out the difficulty of the decision to euthanize animals, as they are part of their lives and they have invested time and money in their care.
