EU Report Reveals Irregularities in Mayors' and Deputy Mayors' Election Spending

A report by the Audit Office reveals serious irregularities in the election spending of Mayoral and Deputy Mayoral candidates in the June 2024 elections. Exceedances of legal spending limits, lack of transparency, and extensive gaps in expense control were found. Only a small percentage of declared expenses (€346k out of €1.2m) are subject to audit, while more than half of the candidates did not submit supporting documents or submitted incomplete information. The report records specific cases of limit exceedances and points out that a large portion of expenses (69%-77%) remains unchecked, such as events and online promotion. The Audit Office proposes mandatory submission of supporting documents, strengthening penalties, and expanding the audit to all forms of political advertising.
