ETEK Urges Immediate Action to Prevent Wildfires

The Scientific and Technical Chamber of Cyprus (ETEK) emphasizes the urgent need for timely and coordinated preventive action to reduce the risk of wildfires in the countryside. This is due to the prolonged low rainfall, which has led to the development of lush vegetation that is highly flammable during the summer months. ETEK proposes specific actions, such as reducing flammable material, conducting controlled burns and controlled grazing, and armoring infrastructure. At the same time, it recognizes the efforts to reorganize civil protection, but stresses that these take time to yield results. The Chamber suggests starting prevention and passive fire protection measures from spring, prioritizing high-risk areas. It also highlights the need to clean up illegal landfills in the countryside, which serve as points of ignition or acceleration of fires. Furthermore, ETEK proposes systematic vegetation management, including the planting of less flammable species and conducting controlled burns under strict protocols and supervision by competent authorities.
