ETEK Calls for Immediate Measures to Address Energy Costs

The President of the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (ETEK), Konstantinos Konstantinou, is calling for immediate measures to address the expected increase in energy costs. He rejects solutions based on extensive public investments, as the cost would burden consumers. Instead, he proposes regulations in the competitive electricity market so that the economic benefits from photovoltaic parks and energy storage are passed on to consumers. He also proposes the establishment of a mechanism to adjust the cost of carbon dioxide in the wholesale electricity market, as this cost is higher in Cyprus compared to the European average. He emphasizes the need to focus on energy efficiency and the transition from grants to tax incentives, as well as providing special care for vulnerable consumers.
