Education Committee: MPs Outraged by Delay of Special Education Bill – 'Mockery by the Government'

Strong dissatisfaction was expressed in the House Education Committee regarding the delay in submitting a bill for special and unified education. MPs from various parties complained that the existing framework is outdated and that consultations on the issue have been ongoing for decades without substantial results. The Committee Chairman, Pavlos Mylonas, described the delay as “unprecedented” and expressed doubts about the government’s ability to find the necessary resources to implement a new bill. Overcrowding in special schools and the lack of day centers were highlighted, while the creation of multi-purpose schools covering the entire spectrum of needs was proposed. MP Christos Christofides of AKEL spoke of a “mockery by the government” as the legislation promised for 2024 has not yet been submitted.
