Audit Committee Seeks Answers from Government Regarding Support Scheme Issues

The Audit Committee is requesting answers from the Government regarding potential issues of collusion and conflicts of interest related to the Independent Social Support Agency. The discussion took place in a tense atmosphere, prompted by the findings of the Auditor General's Annual Report for 2023, which covers the Agency's operation from 2018 to 2024. The Committee President, Zacharias Koulias, stated that the First Lady and former president of the Agency, Philippa Karsera, was unable to attend due to participation in an EU meeting and sent a letter with her positions. The Auditor General, Andreas Papakostantinou, clarified that the audit was administrative and not financial. The report identified weaknesses in registers and procedures, which have largely been corrected since 2023. The Central Bank of Cyprus's refusal to answer a question regarding the application of controls for the legalization of illegal income was also highlighted, with the Audit Office suggesting that the Agency's account be hosted by a commercial bank. Concern was raised by the fivefold increase in contributions and the threefold increase in expenditure in 2024, as well as the fact that revenues came from significant economic entities, including a company with activity in the state, suggesting a possible special relationship. The Audit Office recommended greater transparency and stricter safeguards.
