Low Number of People with Disabilities Employed in the Public Sector in Cyprus

Only 389 people with disabilities have been hired in the wider public sector in Cyprus from 2010 to 2024, according to data presented at the joint session of the House Education and Labor Committees. 291 of these hires are in the Education Service and only 44 in the Public Service. MPs requested clarification on the implementation of legislation providing for 10% of hires for people with disabilities and ways to improve the situation. Representatives of the Department of Social Integration of Persons with Disabilities (TKΕΑΑ) and the Cyprus Confederation of Organizations of Persons with Disabilities (ΚΥΣΟΑ) stressed that the numbers are very low compared to the 10% target and that assessments often do not take into account the real needs of people with disabilities. It was proposed to review the framework and criteria, as well as to change the quota so that it is not limited to entry-level positions.
