Urgent Need for New Schools in Larnaca

The President of the Federation of Parents and Guardians of Larnaca, Kostas Kosta, emphasized the urgent need for the construction of new schools in the city due to the overcrowding observed in eight schools (4 Gymnasiums and 4 Lyceums), where occupancy reaches up to 170%. He pointed out that the Ministry of Education is aware of the number of new students who will be added to the Gymnasiums and Lyceums from the Primary Schools. Furthermore, Mr. Kosta stated that they will not accept further delays in the installation of air conditioning in the school classrooms, setting a deadline of May. He noted that the electrical installations in many schools are old and require upgrading, which delays the installation of air conditioners. Referring to Drosia Gymnasium, Mr. Kosta described the situation as “difficult” due to the large number of students and the peculiarity of the building, which is Turkish Cypriot property. He proposed the utilization of the area of the Dianellio Technical School, whose building has already been demolished, for the construction of a new school. Finally, Mr. Kosta expressed his concern about the bureaucracy observed in the installation of closed-circuit television in schools, emphasizing that the process must be accelerated to ensure the safety of students.
