AKEL Raises Concerns Over Green Transition Plans

AKEL has expressed serious concerns regarding the future of government support schemes for household photovoltaics and energy upgrades. A letter to the Minister of Energy, Michalis Damianou, highlights that the termination of existing schemes at the end of 2025, without the timely announcement of new ones, creates a dangerous policy gap that will undermine the green transition and increase uncertainty for households. Particular emphasis is placed on the abolition of net metering and the universal transition to net billing from 2026, without a transitional phase and without the existence of an affordable energy storage market. AKEL argues that net billing, although necessary for the sustainability of the electricity system, is less beneficial for households, as the economic benefit is transferred to private companies. The party calls on the Minister to immediately present the timetable for new support schemes covering photovoltaics, energy storage, energy communities and building upgrades, as well as measures to make household energy storage accessible to all. AKEL proposes the continuation of net metering for vulnerable groups and tenants, combined grant packages, support for energy communities, subsidized energy audits and the inclusion of newer homes in the support schemes, while also declaring its readiness for dialogue with the Ministry for a fair and economically sustainable energy policy.
