Foot-and-Mouth Disease Outbreak: Concerns Over Transmission from Northern Cyprus

An outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in Cyprus has put authorities on high alert, with vaccinations being the primary measure to combat the disease. The origin of the outbreak remains unclear, however, the head of the Turkish Cypriot Veterinary Association, Burak Toskoy, estimates that there is a high probability it has spread from the occupied territories to the government-controlled areas. In the occupied territories, vaccination of cattle has been completed, while vaccination of sheep and goats is ongoing with the help of vaccines donated by the European Union. Epidemiological surveillance is complicated by the Turkish occupation, which hinders the control of animal movement and the implementation of preventive measures along the Green Line. Turkish Cypriot sources point to the inability to fully prevent animal smuggling, which increases the risk of disease spread.
