Expansion of Bank of Cyprus Oncology Center with Need for Additional Support

The expansion of the Bank of Cyprus Oncology Center with new operating rooms, state-of-the-art equipment, and the creation of a branch in Larnaca is a significant step, however, the administration warns that further financial support from the state will be required to implement the projects and meet the increased needs of patients. The main problem arising from the inclusion of the Center in the GHS is the method of reimbursement, as the existing criteria do not take into account the specialized nature of the Center, which is the only one in Cyprus that provides exclusively oncology services. Discussions are underway with the OAY to legislate recognizing the differentiation of specialized centers. A specialized PET/CT machine worth €4.5 million, funded by an anonymous Cypriot donor, is being installed, reducing the need for patients to travel abroad. At the same time, three new operating rooms are being created, which will be staffed by specialized surgeons, providing comprehensive patient care. Collaborations have been made with other hospitals to reduce waiting lists for diagnostic tests.
