Oncology Center of Bank of Cyprus Expands: Specialized Machine and New Surgeries – New Unit in Larnaca by October 2026

The Oncology Center of Bank of Cyprus is undergoing a significant expansion, with the addition of new operating rooms, the installation of state-of-the-art equipment, and the creation of a branch in Larnaca by October 2026. The center's administration warned the House Finance Committee that additional financial support from the state will be needed to implement the projects and cover the increasing needs of patients. A key issue that arises is the inclusion of the Oncology Center in the GHS, as the existing reimbursement system does not take into account the specialized nature of the center. The center is the only one in Cyprus that provides exclusively oncology services, however, the GHS does not allow for the differentiation of centers based on specialization. Discussions with the HIO are underway to promote legislative regulation that will recognize the differentiation of specialized medical centers. The submission of relevant legislation is expected after the summer, which will allow the HIO to take into account the specialization and uniqueness of a center in order to determine the reimbursement. A specialized PET/CT machine worth €4.5 million is being installed at the center, funded by an anonymous Cypriot donor. In addition, three new operating rooms are being created, which will be staffed by specialized surgeons, allowing for comprehensive patient care. The center has already entered into collaborations with other hospitals to reduce waiting lists for diagnostic tests.
