Rowdy Farmers Protest EU-Mercosur Deal Outside European Parliament: Tear Gas and Clashes

Thousands of farmers from various European countries demonstrated today in Strasbourg, outside the European Parliament, protesting against the EU-Mercosur agreement. The demonstration was marked by tension, with farmers throwing objects at police forces, who responded with tear gas. The farmers are protesting the import of cheap agricultural products from Mercosur countries, which are produced with lower standards and threaten European agriculture. They particularly condemned the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, who signed the agreement. Copa-Cogeca, the organization representing farmers, accused the European Commission of abandoning them. Farmers are demanding that European agricultural practices be safeguarded and local economies protected. Tomorrow, the European Parliament will decide whether to appeal to the European Court of Justice (CJUE) to challenge the legality of the agreement. If the court rules that the agreement is incompatible with European treaties, it will have to be amended or cancelled.
