Children's Rights Commissioner Condemns MEP's Stigmatizing Remarks on People with Disabilities

The Children's Rights Commissioner strongly condemned statements made by MEP Fidias Panagiotou regarding people with disabilities, describing them as “unacceptable, dismissive, and deeply stigmatizing.” The Commissioner emphasized that the use of stigmatizing terms is not a mere slip of the tongue, but rather perpetuates stereotypes, reinforces exclusion, and insults the dignity of people with disabilities, especially children. She highlighted the critical role of language in shaping perceptions and exercising power, as well as its direct consequences for human rights. The Commissioner called for reflection at the individual, political, and institutional levels on how we express ourselves and how we shape policies concerning the rights of people with disabilities.
