EU Trade Commissioner: Calls for Deep and Credible WTO Reform Agenda

European Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič called for a “deep and credible reform agenda” for the World Trade Organization (WTO) ahead of the upcoming Ministerial Conference (MC14) in Cameroon. He argued that the balance of rights and obligations within the WTO does not reflect current realities. The EU’s approach is based on three pillars: predictability, fairness, and flexibility. The Commissioner referred to discussions on China and its imbalances, as well as progress in trade negotiations with India and Mercosur, emphasizing the need for faster ratification of free trade agreements.
