Deputy Minister of Culture Visits Chrysopolitissa Archaeological Site in Kato Paphos

The Deputy Minister of Culture, Dr. Vasiliki Kasianidou, visited the archaeological site of the Paleochristian Basilica of Chrysopolitissa in Kato Paphos, following the completion of significant conservation and upgrade works. The site houses the ruins of the largest Paleochristian basilica in Cyprus, with exceptional mosaic floors, as well as the Column of Saint Paul and the medieval church of Panagia Chrysopolitissa. The completed works focused on the conservation of the footbridges, which had deteriorated. The completion of the works is part of a broader program to upgrade archaeological sites in anticipation of Cyprus's presidency of the Council of the European Union. The Deputy Minister expressed her satisfaction with the result, emphasizing the cooperation between the Department of Antiquities, the architect, and the civil engineer of the Deputy Ministry. She also announced new projects for 2026 in New Paphos, concerning the conservation of the mosaics and interventions in the Tombs of the Kings, with an emphasis on improving the entrance and infrastructure. The Director of the Department of Antiquities, Dr. Georgios Georgiou, emphasized the importance of the site as part of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage, highlighting that the area extends beyond the fenced area with the mosaics. The delivered project was characterized as a substantial technical upgrade.
