Health Committee Calls for Modernization of Public Hospital Operations

The Parliamentary Committee on Health requested further strengthening and modernization of the operation of public hospitals, discussing the budget of the State Health Services Organization (OKYPY) for 2026. Members of Parliament emphasized the need to maintain and ensure the long-term sustainability of the General Health System (GHS) and promoted administrative and financial autonomy for hospitals. DISY highlighted the need to complete the action plan for hospital autonomy, pointing out that this would improve the quality of service provision and reduce the financial burden on patients. It also expressed its support for OKYPY, emphasizing the need for cooperation and control. AKEL expressed concern about the reduction in OKYPY's actual revenues and stressed that public hospitals should be the backbone of the GHS. It criticized the shrinking of mental health services, the lack of a comprehensive strategic plan, and the coverage of permanent needs with the purchase of services instead of creating permanent positions. AKEL will vote for the budget, recognizing the importance of public hospitals, but requests information on OKYPY's strategic plan. It calls for the immediate resolution of issues concerning the staff and infrastructure of hospitals.
