Data Protection Commissioner Clarifies Position on Support Agency

The Data Protection Commissioner, Maria Christofidou, issued clarifications regarding her statements to the House Institutions Committee concerning the Social Support Agency. The clarification addresses criticism she received for allegedly contradictory positions regarding the publication of contributions to political parties. The Commissioner explained that her initial recommendation concerned the removal of an article that would have made the House secondarily responsible for processing personal data, which would have been problematic under the GDPR. The difference with the law on Political Parties is due to the fact that the latter regulation predated the GDPR and the Authority's opinion had not been requested. The Commissioner assured that the Authority remains consistent in applying the GDPR and national legislation.
