€1 Billion Needed for School Infrastructure, €35 Million in State Funds

The needs for school infrastructure in Cyprus are estimated at €1 billion, while state funds allocated are only €35 million, according to the head of the Technical Services Department of the Ministry of Education. The Parliamentary Education Committee examined the progress of projects in school buildings, finding significant delays due to lack of funds. The seismic upgrade of school buildings has been ongoing since 2000, but 78 schools are still pending, with some requiring demolition instead of upgrading. The cost of construction is constantly increasing, exacerbating the problem. In addition, political decisions, such as the expansion of compulsory pre-primary education, create additional infrastructure needs. School boards also face financial difficulties, with maintenance needs exceeding €500,000 per year for each board. Lack of funds affects even basic infrastructure, such as toilets. Despite the increase in the budget in recent years, it remains lower than in 2011, highlighting the need to increase state funding for school infrastructure.
